The Tau Pan Story

Tau Pan isn’t just a safari — it’s a deep dive into the soul of the Kalahari, where the silence hums, the sand shimmers, and surprises await over the next dune.

Tau Pan Camp has the distinction of being the first and only safari camp in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) – the largest game reserve in Africa. This is the ancestral home of the nomadic Bushmen people who have crisscrossed this land of extremes for thousands of years.

The camp is an understated oasis perched atop an ancient dune that overlooks the iconic Tau Pan (meaning Lion Pan in Setswana). This permanent waterhole is famous for its Kalahari black-maned lions, whose deep roars ripple through the dry air like rolling thunder.

Here, you’ll explore the desert on drives and walks with our Bushmen guides and trackers who will help you uncover the Soulful Big. Then there’s Deception Valley, made famous by the controversial Cry of the Kalahari book by Delia Owens, the same author as Where The Crawdads Sing.

Nothing is quite as it seems at first glance. Take a minute to look closer at the empty horizon and you’ll see oryx marching across the dunes like desert royalty and cheetahs streaking across the grasslands in a blur of gold and dust. See that dry stick over there? Dig it up and you’ll find a huge tuber filled with precious life-sustaining moisture.

And when the summer rains arrive, witness the area transform into wildflower meadows teaming with thousands of springbok, wildebeest, and hungry predators.
