The Splash Camp Story

Location, location, location. This is classic Okavango territory: a maze of water channels, woodlands, and open plains.

Splash is built on decades of wilderness know-how, heart-pounding sightings, and a commitment to doing safari right.

Like much of Botswana’s wilderness in the mid-to-late 20th century, these lands were once leased to trophy hunting operations, and the Kwara Private Concession was a hunting block.

Hunting camps were basic setups, seasonal and mobile, built for hunters seeking buffalo, lion, leopard, and elephant — the very animals that now draw camera-toting tourists instead of rifles. The focus was on tracking big game on foot or vehicle, often guided by trackers and experienced professional hunters. While the ethics of trophy hunting is a hot debate today, the revenue from these operations helped preserve vast tracts of wilderness at a time when few other land uses were viable.

In the late 1990s, Botswana pivoted toward low-impact, high-value tourism, and Kwando Safaris was among the pioneers of the movement from consumptive tourism to photographic safaris. We took over the lease and converted the area from hunting to a premier photographic destination.

The legendary Kwara Private Concession remained famous for incredible predator action, permanent water channels, and exclusive access. We’ve taken everything we’ve learned from decades of guiding and guest feedback and turned it into a flagship safari experience. The result? A modern but natural camp that seamlessly blends into its surroundings and feels at once adventurous and luxurious. The old hunting site was used to create Splash Camp and embrace modern safari comforts without losing that raw, untamed feel. Spread out around a permanent pan, the main areas and tents all face water, giving guests a constant connection to wildlife activity — from elephants and lechwe to the occasional predator popping by for a drink.

What our guests say about Splash Camp

Incredible! We came for our honeymoon and were blown away by the beautiful and comfortable rooms, the service, the staff and of course the safari!!

On our last night, they surprised us with a private candlelit dinner (so many candles!). Godfrey and Gomms led our safari and we saw more than we could have dreamed of. Their knowledge was unbelievable! Every question had a detailed answer. Such comfortable and impressive vehicles.

Splendid camp in the Delta.

A really lovely camp in the Okavango delta with a good range of activities. Not only did we go on the usual game drives but also a boat trip down the delta to the heronry as well as a Mokoro experience which was fantastic.

We loved every minute, but I'll point out the people/places that were especially fantastic for us.

TJ was our guide at Splash. He was outstanding - he was extremely knowledgeable and very generous in sharing that knowledge. He not only knew about the landscape, the mammals, the plants, etc. - he could name every bird from a distance and made many of our group's "non-birders" into "birders."

While all of the places we stayed were wonderful, our favourite location was Splash Camp.

We could not have been more thrilled with being in the bush in such a lovely setting and my daughter (and my husband and I!) were amazed by all of the wildlife we saw. We saw everything on "the list" (cheetah; leopard, lions, infant hyena, etc., etc.) all due to the excellent efforts of our guide S.T. and tracker Khowa.
