The Lagoon Story

If Botswana’s safari scene had a secret handshake, Lagoon Camp would be in on it.

This is a low-key luxury hideout with serious safari cred. There are tangled woodlands and winding waterways for afternoon boat cruises on the double-decker boat.

Then, the defined river channels give way to seasonal and permanent floodplains, and oxbow lakes create many secret lagoons favoured by game for drinking in the dry season. This is when the area boasts legendary gatherings of elephants and buffalo — sometimes in herds a thousand strong. These massive congregations naturally attract predators, and Lagoon has earned a reputation as one of Botswana’s premier spots for predators, like lions known for their ability to hunt and kill the thirsty megafauna.

Established in the late 1990s, Lagoon was one of the first camps in this pristine, predator-rich wilderness. Tucked along the shady banks of the Kwando River in the remote Kwando-Linyanti region, elephants casually wander by the camp. In your room, there is a private deck, indoor ball-and-claw bathtub, outdoor shower, and enough space to do yoga with a view (or just sprawl dramatically with a G&T) as hippos grunt their approval from the water.

Lagoon Camp is that perfect Botswana paradox: that rare combination of hardcore wildlife, relaxed riverfront charm, and a family-welcoming atmosphere. It’s raw and refined, thrilling and peaceful, wild and deeply relaxing. Come for the carnivores, stay for the soul.

What our guests say about Lagoon Camp

What Lagoon Camp pulls off amazes me!

The setting is magnificent, the rooms offer big comfort, the food is very good and the service is flawless. When we entered for the first time, a huge herd of elephants emerged from the trees to the nearby riverbank. Sort of a magical, perfect moment of welcome.

One of the best camps we have visited

We have travelled a number of times to Africa and the positioning of this camp has to be one of the best we have ever stayed in. The view from our accommodation was excellent with elephants, giraffe and antelope all coming down to the lagoon to drink, as well as the hippos who took up residency during the day.

A lovely camp perched on the edge of the Kwando River up near the border with Namibia.

We stayed for three nights and were very well looked after by the friendly camp staff and by our excellent guide team of Lucas and expert tracker Vinnie, who spent over an hour on foot tracking two male cheetahs until we eventually caught up with them.
